Retro Blog: Resident Evil 4

Easily the best of the RE's so far with some of the best graphics this generation and very much fun gameplay. Normally the guns don't really matter in games in my opinion but I gotta say the weapons in here are great. The ending leaves a Resident Evil 5 wide open for us as well, which is great. It's also a long game, and has good bossfights, some of them are actually hard to win. A masterpiece from Capcom.

That was my review of Resident Evil 4 back in 2005. Since then I have beaten it a total of four times, and it simply blew me away back then, it was so cool as a 17 year old experiencing this game, it's innovative gameplay still is used by the franchise itself and others today.

And that Gamecube PAL boxart is still one of the coolest and most awesome out there for me. Resident Evil 4 lets you play as Leon S. Kennedy again, as you are tasked with going towards a Spanish village trying to rescue the president's daughter.

Soon enough, you are introduced towards Las Plagas, the parasites that are mind controlling the villagers, which are in turn controlled by the over the top antagonists of the game, including Bitores Mendez, Lord Salazar, Jack Krauser and Osmund Saddler.

Regarded as the most influential video game of the 2000's, inspiring survival horror and shooters, Resident Evil 4 divided the fanbase forever, which later happened again with part 7. It's more of an action horror rather than survival, as enemies drop items, and arguably, only the latter part with the creepy Regenerator monsters is scary.

Gone were the classic tank controls, in where the semi tank controls combined with the new perspective. The game has excellent entertainment factor not only with shooting stuff around, but also for instance with it's funny one liners, and the unlock-able high score game after beating the main story(which I played and got obsessed over night in, night out, at one point).

Resident Evil 4 changed the video game industry forever, and looking back upon it 15 years later, my opinion has not changed. After porting the game towards every available platform, and after Capcom's general recent success, it seems inevitable that this one will be remade too.

Rating: 9.5

(I realize that I haven't talked about Resident Evil 5 much yet at Flok Factory, I will write a bonus mini review for that now; a solid sequel set in West Africa, good co-op action horror, good memes, good game play and a fun final boss.)
