Hell House

Considered to be one of the best haunted mansion novels out there, I already saw the film adaptation The Legend of Hell House previously, but I have decided to bring that review up together with the horror novel.

4 people of different kinds enter the Belasco House, a place that is dwelling with mysterious occurrences, a bloody history and things that defy either a spiritual or a scientific explanation. These include Lionel the physicist, his wife Edith, Florence the spiritualist, and Benjamin, the only survivor from the previous “expedition”, and also a physical medium.

For various reasons, they are participating in this new expedition. Some are during it for the price money, others are doing it out of concern, and some are attempting to proof that it’s all true what has happened and is happening in the building, while others are working in the opposite direction.

Inside, heir sanity will be tested, as their strengths and weaknesses will be diagnosed and corrupted by the house itself, while venturing inside, attempting to cleanse it from evil so to speak. All 4 of them will be challenged mentally and physically in different ways.

The way the scary events are written, such as the poltergeist, the sexual hunting, the delusions and the mental breakdowns, are vividly done, and the selling point that will draw you further into it’s plot. Hell House is a recommendation for horror fans that works as a psychological horror, as it isn’t entirely clear if we really are dealing with the supernatural

 Rating: ***

With magnificent atmosphere, sound and dialogue, The Legend of Hell House, the film adaptation, sucks you right in. And before you know it, the incredible special effects happen, including a ravage poltergeist attack, a possessed cat, "shadow sex", a bloody shower and mysterious sittings.

Just splendid. The camera view is amazing and obscure, while the visuals are unusual yet ultimately also interesting. Unfortunately, the ending is quite lame, and actors could had been better. However, it's an impressive 70's horror!

Rating: 7.0
