HOLY DIVER YOU'VE BEEN OUT TO LONG IN THE MIDNIGHT SEA
A short but very difficult obscure Famicom action platformer where you are a caped man who can shoot short fireballs and use magic spells as his alter blue appearance in order to deliver more damage, or even freeze the lava pits and falls around the game.
Funny enough, this is actually a heavy metal inspired game, with references not only being in the title, but also in the credits, the cover, the name of the protagonist, and so on. However, because of it's hellish and hard nature, I also consider it fitting to play in October.
You can also duck and shoot projectiles upward aside from moving and jumping around. After each stage, and during certain sections, you can find new abilities and raise your stats as you go on, even being able to turn into a dragon.
Holy Diver is created by Irem Corp, and it’s definitely challenging, as it easily stands alongside titles such as Battletoads and Ghosts 'n Goblins in regards to NES Hard Tier, but it is no doubt a must play for hardcore gamers, feeling like a distant brother of Castlevania aesthetically.
