MediEvil

These are spooky times! First announced as a remaster, and then as a remake, MediEvil returned on the PS4, and the fanbase was content and happy. Like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon before, it's my first time playing as Sir Daniel Fortesque.

It's an action adventure game where you can equip a few different weapons, primary and secondary, to slash and hit at your enemies between each level. If you defeat enough, then you can collect chalices, which can then be used to get new items or upgrades.

The visuals and the presentation of the story are fitting and well done, and sometimes, it became too spooky for me! There is a small world map where you can select your levels, and for the most part, this is linear, although only a few times you will need a quest item to get further in another level.

However, despite being apparently a faithful remake, MediEvil is old school when it comes to gameplay. What frustrated me at first is that there are no checkpoints, and you will die instantly if you fall into water or a gap, unless you have enough green health bottles.

The camera movements and the sloppy controls could definitely have been more smooth and fluent even for a newcomer like me. And if you aren't careful, some of the regular enemies can kill you fast, so either keep your distance, use your temporary shield, or hit and run, either of those will help.

MediEvil is charming in a way, but it also felt more outdated than the remasters of Crash and Spyro when it comes to game design. So although it is playable and it has a nice setting, it is rather average and after beating it, there isn't much replay value.

Rating: 6.7
