Hereditary

After the family matriarch passes away, a grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences, and they begin to unravel dark secrets.

Hereditary is filled with emotional horror and suspenseful build-up that does manage to deliver a creepy climax as the family is torn apart and becomes whole in a religious manner. We follow Annie most of all during this story, as she struggles harshly with the recent loss of her mother, and not even halfway in, her daughter as well.

There’s hardly any jump-scare, as instead, there are more psychological and nightmare stuff happening, such as hearing and seeing unpleasant sounds and images, and the emotions dealing with the unknown.

Hereditary takes it’s sweet time progressing as this directional debut stands out for one of the most noteworthy horrors to be found for this year. Seeing Charlie’s head and seeing Annie bonk with her head rapidly are the two scenes sticking out the most for me as far as the horror itself goes.

The religious ending explains the motivation for the abnormalities happening, and makes it memorable. I also liked Annie’s hobby of crafting. The setting and religious madness have been done to death, but the "remix" so to speak found here is fun, and combined with the tragic stuff, it's different.

It looks like this will be the most successful horror for this year.

Rating: 8.0

Upon re-watching it, I discovered that the movie has many background hints and events, letting me appreciate it more. It reminds of The Shining(1980).
