The Changeling

This is one of my most favorite ghost movies. Having seen it many years ago already, I felt motivated and determined to re-watch this classic from 1980. My old review of it felt outdated, so I revised it, and here we are.

Rather forgotten and stuck between gigantic acclaimed horror movies like The Shining (1980) and The Evil Dead(1981), which are great, this chilling picture presents a well done story, with effective buildup and unfolding.

Shortly after a composer tragically loses his wife and daughter during an accident, John played by George C. Scott moves to Seattle, Washington in order to settle inside a large and bleak Victorian mansion, where he resides in order to recover and to get inspired.

In time, John starts noticing unnatural sounds and visions inside, prompting him to investigate. Eventually, he discovers a hidden attic bedroom with a music box and a wheelchair. Through further study, with the help of a female agent managing the estate, it turns out that a child lived in the room.

The Changeling is a psychological ghost horror movie with a good atmosphere, a sad story, compelled acting and scary scenes including an illogical ball, a breaking mirror and a moving wheelchair, all because a murder was made for profit, and a father could not love.
