Equus

                                                                    #323

A powerful movie, my mind is still baffled after the credits rolled, which is a sign of a very good movie. And I am really, really glad to have found another truly good horror movie from the 70's.

Equus is about the very strong downfall of obsession a person can develop for even a beautiful animal such as a horse, or Equus in Latin, and then destroying it in order for salvation to happen, to recover from their own insane cult.

Alan Strang is crippled and isolated from society not because his parents did so, but he himself did. Through a connection between religion and horses, Alan starts worshipping Equus, who is found in every horse.

Not realizing that reality is escaping from his control, Equus, as if it was an evil voice inside his head, starts playing with Alan's strings and thus he becomes very eccentric. But the best performance has got to go to the main character, namely Martin Dysart, Alan's psychiatrist.

The whole movie has powerful dialogue, but it is mainly him contributing the "good stuff" to us. Equus is not your typical horror movie, in essence, the movie becomes more horrifying the more you are "inside" of it, believing the story.

This actually goes for every movie. If you happen to believe it, there is a much better chance of admiring it. For a second I thought lots of horror elements found inside would had to be imagined by the viewer, but then by the end Equus does provide us with a sad, horrifying blood scene.

The main theme was impressive as well, and the investigation was intriguing. Martin eventually starts even envying Alan's personal happiness consisting of even attempting to become one with Equus, one of the many powerful scenes.

I realize that the word "powerful" is said more than once, but that is really the 1 word for describing this in my opinion. Psychologically, Equus delivers highly, and even after it ended it kept interesting me of its contents and messages it offered.

In overall, Equus is excellent, it will most likely last an impression for the majority of people who get the chance to see this obscure movie. (Extremely Extraordinary Equisites)
