Hellnight

Very obscure horror game, this is in essence a huge maze to travel through, while a single enemy is present during the walkthrough. There are some backtracking instances, but because it is in overall easy to navigate thanks to the available maps, it’s not that much of a burden.

The monster chasing you isn’t really scary by its appearance, but it is quite frightening whenever he pops up randomly in the darkness, plus he is an adept runner. Luckily you are able to run as well, but watch out for the stamina meter, or listen to your heart beating.

As for the story, as if it was not narrated confusingly enough, once you traverse far enough in Hellnight, things really become a huge mindfuck as worlds beyond your own appear and the story jumps in quite a lot of places then, like a computer world, religious themes, hybrid alien monsters and freaky ghost instances. Many characters are just odd in general as well.

From a gameplay perspective, think of Clock Tower in 3D, but less scary, more confined and definitely more weird. Thankfully, Hellnight had a terrific soundtrack at certain parts(Research Area most of all) and yes, this was pretty scary to play for the first time! Looks like I didn’t get the best ending with Kamiya though.
