The Babadook

A mother plagued by the violent death of her husband takes care of her young son who is energetic. One day, out of nowhere, mother and son read and learn about The Babadook, a boogeyman like creature that knocks when it's nearby and it will make you wish you were dead instead.

The son is terrified of Babadook but the mother dismisses it as a haunting children's story. In this Australian performance, the mother slowly turns insane as the movie builds up suspensefully and creepy, in subtle ways.

Such as the drawings in the picture book changing towards premonitions, that same book miraculously returning towards the family, similar to a scene in The Changeling(1980). The possession of the mother was also hauning.

The Babadook is an original attempt at horror and the closest similarities I can share are with Insidious(2010) and Sinister(2012) for all feature a shadowy creature that comes at night. And best of all it was effective and I loved the buildup and the pay off was almost as good.
