Layers of Fear
This is my first ever review of a so called Early Access title, meaning that the developers are still working on it, but would like to hear your feedback in the mean time in order to improve upon certain aspects even further.
Layers of Fear is an incredible surprise for various reasons. First of all, it is inspired by Playable Teaser, the ill-fated subtle demo for the cancelled Silent Hills, and it technically could be called an Early Access title as well when I think about it.
Yet it is more than that. There is a central theme playing about paintings and a painter going mad because of God knows what the actual context is while I played through. The colors and sound factor of this are impossible to ignore.
It has some spectacular effects with paintings draining into a mess, confusing and returning rooms, a baby room spinning around your perspective with dangerous messages, a literal ripoff of the ghost lady from P.T., a drowning puppet baby, a giant puppet head, objects moving around and it's all done in a very Silent Hill like way of mind fucking you around which is the game's intention.
This is a very disorientating game where it was quite hard to predict whatever would happen next, because there is a strong psychological theme playing I would presume, and hallucinations or other drug effects could be a cause for this madness.
Layers of Fear has really interested me because of it's suspenseful buildup, it's unpredictable and it has a varied amount of scares, but I wonder how the final game will turn out to be. it would be a shame if the final product would feel repetitive or bland at one point, much like Outlast did for me.
