A Famicom exclusive side scrolling action platformer developed by Konami, Getsu Fuuma Den, also known as Story of the Lunar Wind Demon, is a curious standout title where the hero Fuma fights against hordes of Japanese demons and monsters on a large overworld map.
Similar towards Zelda II gameplay, the game plays non-linear and allows you to travel between gate levels, which act like small level segments before you can continue on with your floaty jumps and lengthy katana sword. A difficult game at first, the game gets more rewarding the longer you play.
An experience meter is present allowing you to level up, and if you gather enough coins, you will be able to buy one time usage items at shops scattered around on the overworld map. NPC's will also provide hints, if you can understand and read Japanese.
The enemy variety is good, and the bosses are intimidating. It's a fairly long game, but it feels fulfilling and worthwhile to beat this epic quest of collecting the Hadouken and defeating the final boss at the end. Konami never made a sequel, and instead decided to reference the game only by cameos.
