Super Mario 3D World

Super Mario 3D World is the sequel towards 3D Land, which both are platformers with plenty of references towards older projects. While Land paid tribute to Super Mario Bros. 3, World pays tribute towards Super Mario Bros. 2 essentially.

The playable characters consists of Mario, Luigi, Toad, Peach and a fifth character. The original four retain the distinctive abilities from each other which were apparent on the NES, but for the first time in 3D, co-operation is available, and it works splendid.

Granted, the gameplay can become hectic, especially once 1 player decides to outrun the rest and thus the camera starts zooming out and panning the 2 locations more until someone usually falls to his death. To persuade this behavior even more, a meaningless golden crown was added in for the players to make it feel like they better than others.

3D World's structure consists of multiplayer combined with 8 and several more worlds to explore, where level design makes it once again clear like 3D Land that each level has a distinctive element to make it more recognizable from the rest.

As it's easily simple to pick up and play, at any time, the pacing is naturally efficient. Additionally, Nintendo has been creative not only towards platform objects, but enemies as well, and combining that with references, remixes and nostalgia makes World another very good game.

Mario games are sometimes critically disregarded because many of them feel too much like each other and can be called rehashes. I can partially agree especially when talking about the New Super Mario Bros. titles, but at other times, Nintendo surely continues to be creative and differentiate about both Mario and Zelda.

It is both a blessing and a disaster that we are spoiled with Nintendo's decisions surrounding Mario, so it's alright to keep playing them. And 3D World manages to feel celebrational not only towards SMB 2, but Mario in general as well.

Linearity is heavily executed here with the exception of hidden stamps and green stars that you will be collecting this time, and that's alright, however, many people after the Galaxy games would like to see the same hub design like 64 and Sunshine once again.

Aside from a fifth character and several extra worlds, the game also provides a Luigi Bros. version of the arcade edition, Miiverse connectivity, ghost runners for time attacks and special Captain Toad stages, which is a mini game where you cannot jump in an otherwise heavily jump infected society.

Super Mario 3D World is entertaining with friends, has enough creative new ideas implemented, is long enough to play and collect through it's experiences and also has several new cool songs. It's a very good step in the right direction and very well made.
