Retro Blog: Half Life/Half Life 2/Black Mesa

Digging up some old reviews not shared on Flok Factory yet.

Half-Life(2004, 2014)

A strong first person shooter adventure with clever level design, challenging enemies and hazards plus an interesting story background. It is also one of the longest single player shooter games I have played, it really felt like this game would never end.

Also had a strong introduction until all hell broke loose, unleashing the alien monsters such as Head Crabs and zombies. And the chapters of the game were just plain fun to explore through, trying to figure out how to get to the next area each time.

Last but not least, Half-Life had introduced to us one of the most effective mysterious characters in any game: G-Man.  I also beat Opposing Force and Blue Shift both once. Rating: 8.4

Half-Life 2(2004, 2014, also beat Episode One in Jul 2011)

Honestly felt that part 1 was better somehow, definitely at least in its game length. Sure the graphics and even the storyline were massively improved, and near the end the chaos was fantastic with those giant robots and all of the Combine shit coming after you, but I never was thrilled by the Gravity Gun and it just isn’t as memorable as the original.

The zombie chapter was also a nice creepy touch and the main villain was an interesting fellow, explaining the world’s situation and your situation. Rating: 8.2

Half-Life 2: Episode Two/1 (Jul 2011, Mid)

Since Episode One wasn’t that much of a spectacle, I decide to jump right into Episode Two regarding reviews, as it starts strong, with your favorite alien species duking it out against each other, plus new enemies to discover.

As a sort of expansion pack, I consider it Half Life 2.5. Just consider Episode One as something stuck between. The game’s chapters are varied and fun, but it ultimately is more of the same. Still, fans of Half-Life 2 should consider it, and Valve should end its story direction for the fans, but as we know, Valve is cursed to forever make sequels towards their products only once.

Black Mesa(2012, 2020)

A mod designed to remake Half-Life with enhanced graphics and some significant changes such as the expanded levels in Xen, a new soundtrack, a mixture of Half-Life and Half-Life 2 weaponry usages and more differences such as new easter eggs and better modified level design to lessen loading times.

Created with the Source engine, the physics of the original game have now also been improved.

I recognized areas I had last seen in 2004, and it played even more fast paced than before as the running button seemed so swift. Once again did I really enjoy and engross the campaign Black Mesa is build upon and I can recommend it to anyone who loves the Half-Life franchise and for the same people who are waiting, like me, for Half-Life 3. Rating: 8.6

Unfortunately, I haven't played Half-Life: Alyx yet, because it's expensive, but I intend to do so in the future.
